South Africa is generally safe, but it's not the UK. We must recognize that it is a 3rd world country, and the crime rate is higher than in the UK. Here are some general safety tips to keep yourself safe and ensure a great holiday without any trouble.
- When driving, don't keep any expensive belongings (phones, jewelry, shopping bags, etc.) in sight. Put them away in the boot, cubby hole, or your pockets.
- Keep your windows closed when stopped at traffic lights, especially if there are beggars nearby.
- Avoid walking around the Durban city center. It has become derelict over the past 20 years. The Durban promenade, shopping malls, and other attractions listed above are much safer.
- Avoid the taxi ranks where possible!
- Tap your pockets every minute or so to make sure you still have your belongings.
- Stay in groups, especially if going out clubbing.
- Don't carry too much cash if you can avoid it. Most places accept card payments.
Here are some tips to make a trip to South Africa more fun and enjoyable!
- Rent a car!! There is basically no public transport in South Africa.
- Rent an automatic car, South Africa doesn't have many automatics so if you rent one you're likely to get a free upgrade to a nicer car.
- Fly Emirates or Qatar airways if you want the best economy flying experience to SA.
- British Airways and Virgin Atlantic do direct flights from Heathrow to Johannesburg but they can be pricey.
- flysafair.co.za 📍 is the best local airline if you want to fly to Cape Town or connect from Johannesburg to Durban.
- Most major stores take card, most now support tap and pay, but some still require your card for chip and pin payments.
- Do carry some cash as there will definitely be some street vendors and such that only take cash. R500-R1000 (~£20-£45) is a good amount to carry around.
- ATM's (Cash machines) will charge around £2-£3 to withdraw from a foreign currency.
